Tug Toys: How to Use Them the Right Way

Tug toys are one of the best tools for building engagement, drive, and obedience — but it’s important to use them properly.

🎥 Watch the video below to see how to play tug the right way and keep your dog motivated, safe, and focused during training.

Important: Tug toys are not chew toys. Their purpose is for interactive play — you hold the toy, your dog bites it, and you use the game to teach obedience skills like “out” and bite control.

When playing tug:

  • Always hold the handles securely.

  • Give your bite command before play.

  • Reward your dog for releasing (“out”) and re-engaging on cue.

If your dog bites the handles, there are usually two reasons:

  1. You’re not holding the handles properly, or

  2. The toy is too large or too firm for your dog’s bite strength.

For smaller breeds like French Bulldogs or Border Collies, a softer fur tug toy is usually easier to grip and more enjoyable.

In the demo, Nasa shows exactly how to do it right — holding a strong grip on the tug itself and releasing on command. The natural fur tug toys are durable and designed to withstand powerful play sessions.

⚠️ Pro Tip:
If you allow your dog to chew the toy instead of engaging in tug play, it will wear out quickly. Used correctly, though, these toys will last and help build obedience, control, and confidence.
