Long Lines: What to Get, How to Use, and Why They Matter
Long lines are one of the most useful training tools you can add to your setup — but using them correctly makes all the difference. At PK9 Gear, we offer a range of 5-meter and 10-meter long lines in durable BioThane and other materials to suit your training style.
🎥 Watch the video below to see how to properly use a long line, when to use it, and what to watch out for when training your dog.
Key tip: A long line won’t train your dog — it will help you train your dog. Use it as a tool to reinforce commands, recall, and control at a distance.
When starting out, always train in a low-distraction environment. Clip your line securely (tactical clips are great for this), and feed the lead through your hand instead of just holding the handle — this gives you better control and helps you safely reel your dog in.
If you’re new to long lines, start with a 5-meter lead — it’s easier to handle and safer in busy areas. Once you’re comfortable or working in open spaces, a 10-meter lead gives your dog more freedom for recall, tracking, or advanced training.
