Slip Leads: How to Use Them Safely and Effectively
Slip leads are a versatile and effective training tool when used correctly. At PK9 Gear, we offer 4 ft and 6 ft slip leads in both 5 mm and 8 mm variants, built for control, comfort, and durability.
🎥 Watch the video below to see how to fit a slip lead properly, understand its key features, and know when to use each length.
Key tip: A slip lead won’t stop your dog from pulling on its own — it’s a tool to assist your training, not a replacement for it.
Our slip leads feature two toggles:
One acts as a backup for safety.
The other can be used to create a limited slip so it doesn’t tighten too much around your dog’s neck.
When fitting your slip lead, make sure it’s positioned correctly:
If your dog walks on your left-hand side, the ring should form a “P” shape when viewed from your position.
Reverse it if your dog walks on your right-hand side.
⚠️ Safety reminders:
Never attach a slip lead to a long line — that’s not its purpose.
Don’t use it as a tie-out. If you need to tether your dog, use a flat collar or harness instead.
A 4 ft slip lead is ideal for close obedience or indoor training, while a 6 ft slip lead gives your dog more freedom on walks or during advanced obedience exercises.
