Tooled Hermann Oak Leather Dog Collar — Auction Lot 184

A natural tan collar cut from Hermann Oak leather, hand-tooled with a floral border the full length of the strap. Solid brass buckle, brass D-ring and brass rivet-and-burr construction. Handmade in Melbourne.

Please note: this collar was originally made with a name stamped into the strap. The tooled floral pattern was worked over the top to cover it, and traces of the original lettering may still be visible on close inspection depending on the light. The reserve has been set to reflect this. It has no effect on the strength or wearability of the collar.

Features:

• Hand-tooled floral border runs the full length of the strap — struck by hand, so no two collars carry exactly the same impression

• Hermann Oak is a vegetable-tanned hide from a St. Louis tannery running since 1881, the benchmark leather for saddlery — it holds its shape rather than stretching out

• Rivet and burr is the traditional saddler's fixing: the rivet is set through a washer and peened over, which won't pull apart the way a double-cap rivet can

• Solid brass buckle and D-ring won't rust, and develop a warm patina with use

• Veg-tan takes tooling deeply and the pattern sharpens rather than fades as the leather darkens

• Creased edges either side of the tooling frame the pattern
