The Fire Horse Comes Once Every 60 Years. We Built a Collection to Match.

2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse in the Chinese lunar calendar. The last one was 1966. The next won't arrive until 2086. The Chinese zodiac combines 12 animals with 5 elements — each specific pairing takes a full 60-year cycle to repeat.

The horse in Chinese culture represents strength, grace, endurance, loyalty, and success. There is a Chinese idiom: "When the horse arrives, success arrives." The Fire element amplifies all of that — intensity, passion, bold action.

A once-in-60-years occasion demanded equally rare materials. Shell cordovan is literal horse leather — the rarest form, from one of the last tanneries on earth still producing it. The fiery red marbling emerged naturally from the tanning process. The gold hardware and thread represent wealth and prosperity.

Lead with the rarity, not the zodiac. The 60-year cycle mirrors the rarity of the materials.

The Leather

Rocado Marbled Red Shell Cordovan
Rocado Tannery, Ponte a Egola, Tuscany, Italy

Not regular leather — it's the dense muscle membrane from beneath the rump of a horse. Only two small pieces per animal.

  • 6-month tanning process, ~100 steps, pure vegetable tannage
  • Marbled finish: outermost surface shaved to reveal vein and fibre structure. No two pieces are identical
  • Doesn't crease — it rolls. Self-polishes with use, develops richer patina over time
  • One of the most expensive leathers in the world per square foot

The Hardware

Hility 24K Gold PVD on 316L Stainless Steel
Hility Bag Hardware — hilitybaghardware.com

316L surgical-grade stainless steel base, not zinc alloy.

  • 24K gold PVD (Physical Vapour Deposition) — gold deposited atom-by-atom, metallurgical bond
  • Hardness: 800–4,000 HV vs 100–200 for standard plating. Lasts 5–10+ years
  • Same tech used by Hermès, Audemars Piguet, Patek Philippe, Apple Watch
  • Up to 30 steps of hand polishing per piece

The Thread

Lajin Twist Gold

Gold metallic thread — 3-filament twisted, proprietary waxing.

  • UV-resistant, moisture-resistant, won't fade
  • Thread becomes a visible design element — gold stitching against red cordovan is a defining feature

Built by Hand

Hand Saddle Stitching

Two needles, each hole, structurally independent stitches. Same technique as Hermès. If one thread breaks, the seam holds.

Edge Creasing

Precision tool presses a decorative line that compresses fibres, guides stitching, and signals craftsmanship.

Edge Burnishing

Friction-polished with gum tragacanth and beeswax to a smooth, sealed finish. Cannot be replicated at scale.

Every Piece is Unique

The marbled shell cordovan means no two collars will ever look the same. Just as the Fire Horse year is singular in a 60-year cycle, each piece in this collection is singular in its pattern.

The marbling comes from the leather's own anatomy — the veins, fibres, and muscle structure revealed during tanning. When aniline dyes meet this exposed surface, they create a watercolour effect that cannot be repeated or controlled. What you receive is the only one that will ever exist.

Built by a Trainer, Not a Factory

Chris Loverseed is a professional dog trainer with over 15 years' experience. He started Positive K9 Training in 2011 and built it into one of the largest dog training schools in Melbourne — covering dog sports, behaviour, assistance dogs, and substance detection.

He started making gear because he was frustrated putting cheap, imported products on dogs every day that fell apart. Every piece is tested on the dogs he works with before it goes to anyone else.

The bespoke side of PK9 Gear has produced custom pieces for Oprah Winfrey's dogs and Jelly Roll's dog Bussie. PK9 Gear is the exclusive dog gear partner of Park Hyatt Melbourne, with stockists across 9 countries.
