Horween Leather Australia – Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan for Dog Collars and Leads
When you're choosing leather for collars and leads, the tannery's reputation and processes matter as much as the finished product. At PK9 Gear, one of our favourite sources is Horween Leather Company in Chicago. They have been making leather the same way since 1905, blending old‑world craft with careful modern practice to produce strong, long‑lasting leather that performs exceptionally for dog gear.
When you handle Horween leather, you'll feel its density and smooth surface immediately. It is the kind of material that softens with time and use while still holding its strength, perfect for working collars and leads.

Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan Explained
On the Horween site, they describe the range of leathers they produce. The two that matter most for PK9 Gear are Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan.
Chromexcel is what Horween calls their original pull‑up leather. It's made using time‑honoured techniques developed almost 100 years ago and still crafted on site.
Chrome Tanning: The process starts with chrome tanning for softness and stability.
Vegetable Retanning: Followed by a vegetable retanning using natural bark extracts.
Hot‑Stuffing: The leather is then hot‑stuffed with a proprietary blend of natural oils and fats, which gives it its distinctive softness, strength, and water resistance.
This combination tanning method typically involves many careful steps over a period of around 28 working days, and it is what gives Chromexcel its rich pull‑up effect and durability.
Horween's Genuine Shell Cordovan is one of the most prized leathers in the world. It comes from a very specific part of a horsehide and is tanned and finished using traditional formulas.
Source Material: Comes from a very specific part of a horsehide, making it exceptionally rare.
Tanning & Stuffing: Each shell section is tanned and stuffed using traditional formulas.
Hand Finishing: Then shaved, hand‑dyed, and polished to create a leather that is dense, smooth, and resistant to creasing.
Time Investment: The process is slow and hands‑on, typically taking at least six months from start to finish.
This is not a general‑use leather but one that excels where durability and finish matter. It's why expert shoemakers and leatherworkers around the world prize it.
We choose Horween leather because it combines several qualities that matter for collars and leads. These traits make it ideal for dog gear that has to cope with real use on real dogs.
Both Chromexcel and Shell Cordovan handle repeated pulling, bending, and tension without weakening.
Chromexcel has natural flexibility while still being strong.
The tanning and hot-stuffing process gives the leather natural resistance to moisture and outdoor exposure.
Rather than cracking or peeling, Horween leather develops a rich colour and character as it ages.
Ideal for creating long, continuous strips needed for training leads and extended field lines. These cuts have consistent strength across their length.
Cut from select portions of those hides, perfect for dog collars where comfort, consistent thickness, and surface finish are priorities.
At PK9 Gear, we use Horween leather in several products:
Hand-cut, bevelled and burnished for strength and comfort.
Crafted from side and butt cuts for extended durability.
A raw Horween strip suitable for heavy gear may cost around $55 AUD, but when you combine it with hand-finishing and solid brass or stainless hardware, the final product is built to last for years.
If you want to design something truly tailored, we offer bespoke dog collars and leads using Horween leather, cut and finished by hand in Melbourne to your specifications.
